A Frank Conversation about Weight Loss
Last week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with intuitive coach Fran Gallaher for what she called a “mind-blowing” discussion about food, hunger, and weight.
You see: a while ago, Fran approached me about being a guest on her podcast. Her original thought that was that I would be an interesting person to talk with about weight loss.
As I listened to her kind invitation, I knew immediately that what Fran was proposing wasn’t a fit for me.
Why?
Because these days I’m super clear that I will not put my name on anything that has to do with the pursuit of weight loss.
So: I gently but firmly declined Fran’s invitation. Understandably, she was curious as to why – and so I started talking. I talked about:
- how we’ve been led to believe that the pursuit of weight loss is a noble self-improvement effort (when it’s really just another way that society has conditioned us to believe that we’re not good enough)
- the widespread prevalence of fatphobia (and why it’s a social justice issue)
- the research that proves that healthy bodies come in ALL sizes
- the overwhelming data that shows that 95% of people who lose weight on a diet will gain it back
- and more…
Fran listened. I mean – she really listened. Then she asked: would you be willing to have THIS conversation with me on the podcast?
Absolutely, I said.
So, last week, we did. And it was a blast.
